A Celebration of Us All

Winter Shelter
This year 18 senior artists who stayed at St. Mary’s Center’s shelter in 2005 created these papier-mache masks in a creative arts class. We asked our masks what wisdom they offer for ourselves and our community. We discovered and named what is meaningful in guiding each of our lives.

In making these masks we faced many challenges and unknowns. We persevered amidst doubts and fears. We discovered that while making art we relax, stop thinking about our problems, open to new ideas, and enjoy being ourselves. We learn about ourselves and to respect our individual truths. We experience our strengths and appreciate our ability to create our lives.

We present our masks in celebration of the uniqueness of each of us, and the unity of our common humanity.

HOPE

Tho the clouds of life gather, and life’s rain falls down on us, the Sun is always shining.
There’s a rosy tinted lining after the storms of life are weathered: the promise of a better day.
Back of the clouds, the Sun is always shining, it’s still in the sky above you.
I help Geraldine to always have hope - the Sun will come out again - don’t be afraid of the rain.
My wisdom for our community is life rains on us but it can’t rain all the time.

ALL PEOPLE

I am different colors for all the people of the world.
I am peace and harmony.
A safer world for everybody.
I help Greg to get along with different people of the world.
My wisdom for our community is for all people to see the light to have world peace.
Everybody getting along.

ARABELA

I am colorful and whimsical.
I accept my tears, because without sadness I could not know joy.
I shed darkness and sorrow and choose the light.
I feel free to be silly.
I look at life and at people with my third eye and tune in with my antennae.
I help Kathy keep a positive attitude and remember that there is beauty in life.
Making a positive contribution to our community creates a positive effect in me as well.
Kindness is contagious.
Pass it on.

ROBERT

I have big eyes.
I dress in colors according to my mood.
I try to make the best I can of a bad situation.
I help Robert to keep trying to reach his goals and to not give up on his goals.
My wisdom for our community is to be more tolerant of my surroundings and other people.
